The nutrition app Western calorie apps forgot to build.
Every calorie tracker on the market was built for oatmeal, chicken breast, and salad. If you eat 滷肉飯, biryani, bibimbap, or tacos, you were left guessing the calories yourself — or giving up on tracking entirely.
Why we built Bao
Millions of people across Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and diaspora communities have been an afterthought for nutrition apps for years — recognized poorly, translated poorly, or not supported at all. Bao is an AI nutrition coach that identifies your food, reads restaurant menus in any language, and coaches you in plain language — not just for chicken breast and oatmeal, but for the food you actually eat.
I'm Andrew, a Taiwanese-American living in Taipei. I lift and track calories to stay in a deficit — Western apps got my oatmeal and chicken breast right, but dinner was always a guess. Lu rou fan came back as "beef stew, 400 calories." So I built the app I actually needed: one that knows Asian food as well as it knows Western food. Bao is made in Taiwan, by someone who eats both.
